A political gathering involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State was reportedly disrupted on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, as the opposition party began its campaign activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

A troubling pattern?
The latest allegation has immediately revived memories of a similar confrontation involving the ADC in Kaduna in August 2025.
On August 30, 2025, suspected political thugs disrupted the inauguration of an ADC-linked opposition coalition in Kaduna. Participants were reportedly attacked, vehicles damaged and several people injured.
The police subsequently said the gathering had not been properly notified to security agencies and launched an investigation, while ADC leaders accused the police of failing to protect participants and of attempting to criminalise legitimate political activity.
The matter eventually went before the courts.
In October 2025, a Kaduna High Court awarded ₦15 million in damages against the Kaduna Commissioner of Police and issued a perpetual injunction restraining the police and their agents from disrupting or interfering with lawful political meetings and rallies in the state.
The court described the police action connected with the meetings as unlawful.
That judicial history makes Wednesday’s reported incident particularly concerning.
APC connection must be established, not assumed
There are already allegations in political circles that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and state authorities may be behind efforts to frustrate opposition activities in Kaduna.
However, Headlineswave cannot independently verify that allegation at this stage.
Neither the existence of an APC directive to disrupt the rally nor direct involvement of APC officials has been established by the evidence currently available to us.
That does not, however, make the reported disruption insignificant.
If security agencies were responsible for stopping a peaceful political gathering without a lawful basis, that would raise serious questions about the protection of citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.
And if political thugs were involved, the responsibility of the security agencies becomes even more important: they must identify the perpetrators, arrest them and establish who sponsored or directed them.
Nigeria cannot afford a return to political thuggery
The 2027 election season is already generating intense political competition across the country.
The proper response to opposition parties gaining visibility should be political competition — not intimidation, violence, harassment or the use of state institutions to frustrate legitimate political activity.
The APC, as the ruling party, has an especially important responsibility to demonstrate that it is confident enough to compete with opponents on policies, programmes and public support.
Likewise, opposition parties must conduct their activities peacefully and comply with lawful security requirements.
What Nigeria cannot afford is a situation where opposition parties are prevented from campaigning simply because their activities are politically inconvenient to those in power.
The reported Kaduna incident therefore deserves a transparent investigation.
If the police were involved, the command should explain exactly what happened and under whose authority. If thugs were involved, they should be arrested and prosecuted.
And if there is evidence linking any political party or political actor to the incident, that evidence should be made public.
Democracy cannot survive when political competition becomes a contest over who can deploy greater force.

A democratic society must protect the right of political parties and citizens to organise, campaign and persuade voters peacefully.
