Release my Certificates for Nigerians to Verify — Obi tells UNN, NYSC
Former Anambra State Governor and National Democratic party, NDC, presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he has no objection to the release of his academic and other relevant records for legitimate public scrutiny.
Obi stated this in response to reports of legal action by an individual or group seeking Certified True Copies (CTCs) of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, which he said was awarded by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), in 1984.
He said he had “absolutely no objection” to the release of his records and urged UNN to make available, within the limits permitted by law, his academic certificates, records and other official documents relating to his admission and studies upon a legitimate request.
He extended the request to other institutions he attended, including the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.

“I believe strongly in transparency and accountability, particularly for those who seek the privilege of public office,” Obi said.
He stressed, however, that public scrutiny must be fair, lawful and applied consistently to all those seeking to lead Nigeria. As a presidential candidate, he said he welcomed legitimate public interest in his background, qualifications and record.
“I am prepared to subject myself to the level of scrutiny that should reasonably be expected of anyone seeking the highest office in our country,” he said.
Obi also urged other presidential candidates to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for legitimate scrutiny, saying such disclosure should be seen not as an attack or inconvenience but as an opportunity to strengthen public confidence, promote accountability and rebuild trust in political leaders.
“Leadership must reflect the values we expect from the society we hope to build,” Obi said, adding that transparency, integrity, accountability and respect for institutions should begin with those seeking to lead the country.
He reiterated his willingness to have his academic background scrutinised, saying those seeking Nigerians’ trust must earn it through openness and accountability.
