Tinubu, Nollywood Mourn Francis Duru as Veteran Actor Dies at 57

Nigeria’s entertainment industry is mourning the death of veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, whose passing at the age of 57 has drawn tributes from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, fellow actors and fans across the country.

Duru’s family announced his death in a statement published on his official Instagram page on Friday, October 23, 2026, saying he passed away following a brief illness. The family, however, did not disclose the specific illness or provide details of his burial arrangements.

President Tinubu subsequently expressed condolences to the actor’s family, colleagues, fans and the wider Nigerian film industry, describing his death as a painful loss to the nation’s creative community.

In a statement issued by the State House, the President acknowledged the contributions of veteran performers such as Duru to the growth of Nollywood, particularly their role in shaping Nigerian storytelling, nurturing emerging talent and projecting the country’s culture to audiences at home and abroad.

The President also prayed for the peaceful repose of the actor’s soul and strength for his family and loved ones.

Francis Duru: The Actor Who Became Ahanna

For many Nollywood fans, Francis Duru will forever be remembered for his memorable portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the 1995 action film produced by celebrated filmmaker Amaka Igwe.

The performance helped establish Duru as a recognisable face in Nigerian cinema during the formative years of the home-video industry.

Born in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru later returned to Nigeria, where he studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt.

He began his acting career in 1989, appearing in Missing Mark, before gaining wider recognition through Rattlesnake. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he featured in numerous productions, including Blood Vessel, Home in Exile, Stigma, The Good Husband and Mboputa.

His performance in Mboputa earned him the Best Actor in a Leading Role award in the Igbo-language category at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards.

Beyond acting, Duru also contributed to the development of the industry. He served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010 and received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007 in recognition of his positive influence on young people.

A Loss That Has Deepened Nollywood’s Grief

The actor’s death comes after a difficult period for his family. In August 2024, Duru announced the death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, a devastating loss he publicly mourned.

Earlier in 2026, the actor had also pushed back against online reports claiming he was critically ill, describing the circulating claims and footage as misleading.

His family’s announcement of his death has now prompted an outpouring of condolences from the entertainment community and admirers who grew up watching his performances.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria confirmed his passing, with its president, Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, paying tribute to the late performer as a great thespian.

For audiences who remember the golden era of Nigerian home-video films, Duru’s contribution went beyond individual roles. He belonged to a generation of performers who helped make Nollywood a major platform for Nigerian stories, languages and culture.

His legacy will live on through the films he made, the characters he brought to life and the memories he created for generations of movie lovers.

As condolences continue to reach his family, colleagues and fans are left to celebrate a career that helped shape Nigerian entertainment.

Headlineswave.ng extends its condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and admirers of Francis Duru. May his soul rest in peace.

This report is based on the family’s announcement and reports by the Nigerian State House, Premium Times and Channels Television.
