President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde have expressed joy following the successful rescue of all the pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after spending 56 days in captivity.
The Presidency announced on Friday that the victims regained their freedom following a coordinated operation involving the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the police and other security agencies. The operation led to the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers, while several others were reportedly neutralised.
In his reaction, President Tinubu described the rescue as a huge relief to the affected families and the nation.
“I am profoundly happy that our security forces successfully rescued the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire, Ogbomoso in Oyo State today after a military, police and intelligence-driven operation that neutralised some of the terrorists that perpetrated the evil act and led to the arrest of eight of them,” the President said.
Tinubu praised the armed forces, DSS, police and intelligence agencies for their professionalism and sacrifice, saying the successful operation demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian remains in the hands of criminals.
He also directed that the rescued victims receive immediate medical attention, psychological support and proper rehabilitation.
Reacting to the development, Governor Seyi Makinde described the release of the victims as “a big relief” for their families and the entire state.
The governor thanked President Tinubu, the service chiefs, security agencies and everyone who contributed to the operation, while assuring residents that his administration would continue working with security agencies to safeguard lives and property across Oyo State.
The pupils and teachers were abducted on May 15, 2026, when gunmen attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
Their release ends 56 anxious days of uncertainty that attracted nationwide concern and renewed calls for stronger security around school.
Although reports have circulated on social media alleging that ransom was paid, no government authority has confirmed any ransom payment, and the Oyo State Government had earlier denied such claims.
As of the time of filing this report, there is no verified evidence that any ransom was paid for the victims’ release.
