Supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) have welcomed the party’s latest legal move after its leadership announced that it has filed an appeal against the recent court ruling ordering its deregistration.

The party also disclosed that it has filed an application for a stay of execution of the judgment, saying the relevant court documents have already been served on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with a request for the electoral body to act in accordance with the law while the appeal is pending.

Addressing party members and supporters, the NDC leadership maintained that the party remains a legally registered political platform and is continuing with preparations for the 2027 general elections.

According to the party, its nomination process has already been concluded nationwide, with candidates having emerged through primaries that it said were observed, monitored and documented by INEC.

The party explained that what remains is the administrative process of uploading the names of its candidates to the INEC nomination portal.

It revealed that the names of its National Leader and presidential candidate have already been uploaded, while that of the vice-presidential candidate is expected to be submitted after the completion of the required documentation.

The process of uploading candidates for other elective offices is also said to be ongoing.

The NDC noted that it remains within the timetable released by INEC, stating that it has until July 11 to submit candidates for the National Assembly elections and until July 17 for governorship and State House of Assembly candidates.

The leadership therefore urged party members and supporters not to panic, insisting there is sufficient time to complete all nomination requirements.

Acknowledging that the party’s primary elections were not without challenges, the NDC thanked aspirants who participated in the process and pledged that reconciliation efforts were already underway across the country.

It assured members who did not secure the party’s ticket that they would continue to play active roles in campaign activities, committees and the party’s organisational structure.

The party also expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their support and reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

The NDC further commended INEC, led by Professor Joash Amupitan, for what it described as professionalism in implementing court directives relating to the registration of the party and other political matters.

It urged the commission, the judiciary and security agencies to remain neutral in safeguarding the country’s democratic institutions.

The party concluded by expressing confidence that the judiciary would determine the appeal in accordance with the law, noting that the legal process is now before the courts.
