The Labour Party (LP) in Plateau State has unveiled respected grassroots politician and businessman, Nura Tanko Waziri, as its governorship candidates for the 2027 general election, following the emergence of Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as the party’s presidential flag bearer..
The development signals the party’s determination to strengthen its political structures ahead of the 2027 elections despite the ongoing leadership disputes within the Labour Party.
Nura Tanko Waziri, a member of the civil society community, Peace Ambassador, industrialist, automobile dealer, and former member of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) during the 2023 elections, is expected to play a key role in the party’s efforts to consolidate support across Plateau State.
Party supporters describe Waziri as a grassroots mobilizer with strong connections across various communities in Plateau.
His experience in business, peace-building initiatives, and political engagement is seen as an asset as the party prepares for the next electoral cycle.
The announcement comes shortly after the state Party primaries held on Saturday May, 30 2026 at the party Secretariat where Dr. Chibuzo Okereke was announced as the Labour Party’s consensus presidential candidate.
Okereke, a governance expert, policy strategist, and President of ERGAF-AFRICA Legislative Governance Innovation and Policy Hub, was endorsed by stakeholders who believe his expertise in public policy and institutional reforms could provide a fresh direction for Nigeria.
Political observers say the emergence of both Okereke and Waziri reflects the determination of some Labour Party stakeholders to position the party as a credible alternative in the 2027 elections.
