Residents of Plateau State have expressed excitement following the revelation of promising oil and natural gas prospects in parts of the state after the completion of a five-year geological study.
The study, which has generated widespread interest among stakeholders, identified encouraging hydrocarbon indicators within sections of the Upper Benue Trough that extends into Plateau State.
Experts involved in the research recommended further exploration to determine whether the deposits exist in commercially viable quantities before any declaration of a commercial oil discovery can be made.
The latest findings have renewed optimism that Plateau could one day join the ranks of Nigeria’s oil-producing states if subsequent exploration confirms commercially recoverable reserves.
The development also brings renewed attention to earlier frontier basin exploration activities carried out by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited in Wase and Kanam Local Government Areas, where geological surveys had indicated significant hydrocarbon potential.
Industry experts have, however, urged caution, stressing that identifying promising oil and gas prospects is not the same as discovering commercially producible crude oil.
They explained that extensive seismic studies, exploratory drilling, appraisal wells and regulatory certification are still required before any commercial discovery can be confirmed.
Despite the caution, many residents believe the findings represent a significant milestone for Plateau State.
They say successful exploration could attract major investments, create employment opportunities, boost internally generated revenue and stimulate economic growth across the state.
Community leaders and business stakeholders have also called on the Federal Government, NNPC Limited and other relevant agencies to sustain exploration efforts to unlock the state’s natural resource potential while ensuring environmental protection and community participation.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official announcement by NNPC Limited or the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) confirming a commercial crude oil discovery in Plateau State.
The available findings indicate promising geological prospects that require further exploration and verification.
Why this matters
If future exploration confirms commercially viable oil and gas reserves, Plateau State could witness increased infrastructure development, job creation, industrial expansion and greater economic diversification.
Until then, the current findings should be viewed as a promising scientific breakthrough rather than a confirmed oil discovery.
This report is based on verified geological findings and publicly available information.
