Reno Omokri has publicly stated that allegations linking Peter Obi to drug trafficking in Peru are false after conducting what he described as an independent investigation in South America.

The former presidential aide made the disclosure in a statement posted on X on Wednesday while reacting to comments allegedly repeated by former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo.

According to Omokri, he travelled to Peru in November 2022 shortly after visiting the United States to verify the academic records of Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Chicago State University during the buildup to the 2023 presidential election.

Omokri Says He Visited Prison in Peru
In his statement, Omokri explained that he personally visited a women’s prison in Lima, Peru, alongside a witness and recording equipment to investigate claims that Obi allegedly sponsored a female drug courier who was later arrested and implicated him during trial proceedings.

He said discussions with authorities and findings from the trip showed there was no evidence connecting Obi to the allegation.

According to him:

“I proceeded to Peru to investigate this claim. I went to the women’s prison in Lima, Peru, with a witness who is still alive and a video camera. I also visited authorities in that country and confirmed that the story that Peter Obi is a drug baron who sponsored a female drug mule to Peru is false.”

Omokri also noted that he granted an interview from Cusco, Peru, during the period of the investigation.

Call for Responsible Political Discourse

The ambassador-designate to Mexico urged political actors and supporters ahead of the 2027 general election to avoid recycling unverified allegations capable of misleading the public or escalating political tension.

He added that the investigation was personally funded and carried out in the interest of fairness and factual reporting despite political disagreements.

Omokri further disclosed that he later contacted Dokubo and advised him to stop repeating the claims because they had already been investigated and debunked.

Renewed Political Tensions Ahead of 2027

The latest development comes as political discussions ahead of the 2027 presidential election continue to intensify across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Peter Obi remains one of the prominent opposition figures expected to play a major role in the next election cycle, while debates involving supporters and critics of leading politicians continue to dominate social media and public discourse.

Observers say the growing circulation of old allegations and political narratives may further shape conversations ahead of future campaigns.
