Soludo Pardons Akwa Okuko, Turns Former Inmate Into Youth Reformation Ambassador
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has granted a pardon to popular native doctor Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, bringing an end to his imprisonment and giving him a new public responsibility as Ambassador for Youth Reformation in the state.
The development represents a significant turn in the story of a man whose activities once placed him at the centre of Anambra’s controversial crackdown on money rituals and alleged quick-wealth practices.
How Akwa Okuko ended up in prison
Akwa Okuko was arrested in February 2025 during the Anambra State Government’s crackdown on native doctors whose activities authorities linked to money rituals, “Oke Ite” practices and the preparation or promotion of charms allegedly associated with criminal activities.
He was among a group of native doctors targeted following the implementation of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law and the government’s broader security campaign.

He was subsequently arraigned before the High Court in Awka alongside other native doctors. At the initial stage of the case, he pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
By February 2026, however, Nwangwu had entered into a plea-bargain arrangement with the state government and was convicted over offences relating to the practice of Oke Ite and related matters.
The court sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment, with the time he had already spent in custody taken into account, leaving about 11 months to serve. The court also ordered the demolition of his shrine in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, and directed him to renounce the practices connected with the case.
Importantly, rehabilitation was already part of the arrangement. He was expected to turn away from the practices that brought him into conflict with the law and participate in efforts aimed at discouraging young people from pursuing ritual practices and dangerous shortcuts to wealth.

From prison to youth reformation
Akwa Okuko had been serving his term at the Nigeria Correctional Service facility in Amawbia when Governor Soludo visited the correctional centre and announced his pardon.
The governor exercised his prerogative of mercy, securing Nwangwu’s release and giving him the new responsibility of serving as Ambassador for Youth Reformation in Anambra.
Dr Nelson Omenugha, Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Reformation, described the development as an example of an approach that goes beyond punishment to include correction, restoration and reintegration.
What the new appointment means
The appointment gives Akwa Okuko a completely different public role from the one that made him famous.
Rather than being presented as a promoter of quick wealth and ritual practices, he is now expected to use his influence, particularly among young people, to encourage a different message: that wealth should not be pursued through rituals, criminality or dangerous shortcuts.
