The Labour Party has announced a new date for its 2027 primary elections, rescheduling all previously planned exercises to Saturday, May 30, 2026.
The party disclosed that the governorship and State Houses of Assembly primaries earlier fixed for May 27, as well as the presidential and National Assembly primaries scheduled for May 29, would now hold simultaneously on the new date.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the adjustment was made due to the coincidence of the earlier dates with two significant national events.
According to the statement, May 27 coincides with the 2026 Eid el-Kabir celebration, while May 29 marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders across Nigeria.
The party explained that the decision was taken to allow members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians at large to fully participate in both the religious celebration and the national anniversary activities.
“In consideration of the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the 29th May anniversary, the Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political party, deemed it appropriate to adjust its schedule,” the statement read.
The opposition party also expressed regret over any inconvenience the rescheduling may cause to aspirants and stakeholders, while appealing for understanding and cooperation.
The announcement comes amid increasing political activities and alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major parties intensifying consultations, screenings, and internal preparations across the country.
Political observers believe the new unified date could help the party streamline logistics and boost participation nationwide as attention gradually shifts toward the presidential race.
