BLACK SUNDAY: CAN LEADS NATIONWIDE MOURNING AS NIGERIA BLEEDS UNDER ESCALATING INSECURITY
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Sunday led Christians across the country in observing what it described as “Black Sunday” in honour of thousands of Nigerians who have lost their lives to insecurity.
The solemn observance comes amid growing concerns over persistent attacks by terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other violent criminal groups operating across different parts of the country.
In a nationwide message, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the Church could no longer remain silent while innocent
Nigerians continue to live in fear and uncertainty.
“Our nation is bleeding,” Okoh declared, noting that countless families have been devastated by violence, displacement, and loss.
The CAN President said the remembrance coincides with the country’s Democracy Day celebrations, stressing that true democracy cannot thrive where citizens are unable to live, work, worship, or travel safely.
According to him, the protection of human life remains the foundation upon which every democratic society is built.
While sympathising with victims and their families, CAN called on federal, state, and local governments to take urgent and decisive steps to end the worsening security situation.
The Christian body also welcomed the recent passage of the Community and State Policing Bill by the House of Representatives, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening grassroots security structures across the country.
CAN further urged churches, schools, hospitals, and faith-based institutions to adopt stronger security measures and remain vigilant in the face of prevailing threats.
As prayers were offered for victims, security personnel, and national leaders, the association called on Nigerians to unite against violence and work collectively toward peace, justice, and national healing.
The Black Sunday observance serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of insecurity and the urgent need for lasting solutions to one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.
