FACT CHECK: Is Peter Obi parading a fake university degree? Here are our findings
A claim circulating in political circles and on social media alleges that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), is parading a fake university degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

More importantly, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has formally authenticated the certificate and confirmed that Obi was admitted to study Philosophy at the institution in 1980 and was subsequently awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy.
What triggered the controversy?
The controversy largely revolves around Peter Obi’s 1978 examination results.
A copy of a West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result associated with Obi showed that he obtained passes rather than credits in English Language and Mathematics.

Critics subsequently argued that he could not have been admitted to study Philosophy at UNN without credits in those subjects.
Questions were also raised about differences in the names appearing on some of Obi’s academic and NYSC documents.
These issues have been repeatedly used online to suggest that the former Anambra State governor’s university qualification was fabricated.
What did UNN say?
Premium Times wrote to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, under the Freedom of Information Act, asking the institution to verify Obi’s admission, qualification and the authenticity of his degree certificate.
In its response dated August 26, 2026, the UNN Registrar’s office confirmed that Gregory Peter Onwubuasi Obi was duly admitted to study Philosophy at the university on September 3, 1980.
The university also authenticated the degree certificate presented to it.
According to the response, the certificate was issued by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and awarded by the University Senate. It identifies Obi’s qualification as a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Second Class Honours (Lower Division), dated December 15, 1984.
The university further gave the certificate number as D000198.
But what about the WAEC result?
This is where the controversy becomes more complicated.
The WAEC result examined by Premium Times showed passes in English Language and Mathematics, which critics argued would have prevented Obi from gaining admission into Philosophy.
However, UNN stated that the O’Level credentials presented by Obi met the admission requirements applicable at the time.
The university explained that Obi’s qualification for admission was based on a combination of his June 1978 WAEC result and another November/December 1978 GCE result.
UNN specifically stated that Obi was “qualified ab initio” and that there were no alternative admission pathways, exemptions or remedial programmes involved in his admission.
Is the second examination result available?
There is an important caveat.
Premium Times reported that although UNN referred to the November/December 1978 GCE result and other documents as annexures to its response, the newspaper did not receive those annexures.
The newspaper subsequently requested the missing documents from the university but reported that they had not been supplied as of the publication of its fact-check.
Therefore, while UNN has authenticated Obi’s degree and confirmed his admission and graduation, the details of the second 1978 examination result have not independently been examined in the Premium Times investigation.
What about the different names?
Another issue raised by critics concerns the names appearing on Obi’s documents.
The UNN response identifies the student as Gregory Peter Onwubuasi Obi, while the public figure is commonly known as Peter Obi.
Differences in the presentation of names on academic and NYSC documents have previously generated questions.
However, the existence of different versions of a person’s name on documents does not, by itself, establish that a university certificate is forged.
In this case, the institution that allegedly issued the certificate has checked the document against its records and confirmed that it emanated from UNN and was awarded to Obi.
Our finding
Based on the evidence currently available, the claim that Peter Obi is parading a fake University of Nigeria degree certificate is FALSE.
The strongest evidence in the matter is the response from the institution itself: UNN authenticated the degree, confirmed Obi’s admission in 1980 and confirmed that he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Second Class Honours (Lower Division), in 1984.
However, transparency requires noting that the November/December 1978 GCE result cited by UNN was not made available to Premium Times despite requests for the annexures.
That unresolved documentation issue does not amount to evidence that the degree certificate is fake.
