Peter Obi’s Congratulatory Message to Hausa Community on Hausa Day Stirs the Hornet’s Nest

Obi, in a message celebrating the Hausa people and their contributions to Nigeria, congratulated the community as they marked the occasion in Daura, Katsina State.

The former Anambra State governor described the Hausa people as an important part of Nigeria’s national story, highlighting their contributions to the country’s culture, traditions, agriculture, enterprise, scholarship, public service and community development.

“ The Hausa people have made significant and lasting contributions to the growth and development of our nation, enriching Nigeria through their culture, traditions, enterprise, agriculture, scholarship, public service, and dedication to community,” Obi said.

He stressed that the celebration should go beyond the recognition of Hausa cultural heritage, arguing that it should also serve as an opportunity to strengthen the bonds that unite Nigerians across ethnic and cultural lines.

According to him, Nigeria’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths, while the country’s future depends on respecting and recognizing the contributions of all its constituent communities.

“As you celebrate in Katsina, I wish you peace, prosperity, and a renewed sense of hope,” Obi said.

He further called for a Nigeria in which every citizen, irrespective of ethnicity or background, enjoys equal opportunities to thrive.

“May this occasion bolster our unity and inspire us to build a Nigeria where every citizen, regardless of ethnicity or background, has equal opportunities to flourish,” he added.

Message Triggers Reactions

Obi’s message has generated conversations among Nigerians, particularly against the backdrop of the country’s deeply contested political and ethnic landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While supporters have praised the NDC candidate for extending his message to the Hausa community and emphasizing national unity, some reactions have questioned the political significance of the gesture coming ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

Others, however, have argued that celebrating the cultural identity and contributions of any Nigerian community should not automatically be interpreted through a political lens.

The development has once again brought questions of ethnicity, inclusion and national cohesion to the centre of political discourse as parties and presidential aspirants position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

For Obi, the message was anchored on the need to celebrate Nigeria’s diversity while building a country where citizens are treated equally regardless of their ethnic or cultural background.

His appeal for unity comes at a time when political parties are increasingly seeking support across Nigeria’s diverse regions and communities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
