Peter Obi Throws Weight Behind Makinde, Says Oyo Governor Is Qualified to Be President

ABUJA — Former presidential candidate and National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has thrown his weight behind the presidential ambition of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, declaring that the governor is qualified to become President of Nigeria.

Obi made the declaration on Monday while speaking at the inauguration of Makinde’s presidential campaign office in Abuja, an event that brought together supporters and political associates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing the gathering, Obi described Makinde as his “dear brother” and was unequivocal when asked whether the Oyo governor possessed the qualification required to lead Nigeria.

“Is he qualified to be President? Yes, he is qualified,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also used the occasion to call for a Nigeria where political differences would not prevent leaders from working together in the national interest.

According to Obi, the 2027 election should be about allowing Nigerians to freely choose their preferred leaders through a transparent, free and credible electoral process.

He said political actors should be willing to work together for the country regardless of who emerges victorious at the polls.

“Whoever wins, genuinely, from a free, fair and credible election, we all want to work together to save this country from collapse,” Obi said.

The statement is likely to attract significant attention within political circles, coming at a time when several prominent politicians are positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Makinde, who has governed Oyo State since 2019, has increasingly featured in national political discussions over the future leadership of Nigeria.

Obi’s presence at the inauguration of the governor’s campaign office, coupled with his explicit declaration that Makinde is qualified to become president, is expected to fuel further discussions about political alignments and possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 polls.

However, Obi’s statement that Makinde is qualified to be president does not, by itself, amount to a formal endorsement of the governor’s candidacy. His remarks centred on Makinde’s eligibility and capacity to seek the office.

As political parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 elections, the relationship between the various opposition figures and emerging political alliances is expected to remain a major focus of national attention.
