The Labour Party has formally flagged off its 2027 governorship election campaign in Abia State, with Governor Alex Otti using the occasion to send a strong message to opposition parties, warning his supporters against intimidating political opponents or obstructing their legitimate campaign activities.

The flag-off ceremony took place on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at the Umuahia Township Stadium, attracting party leaders, elected officials, political stakeholders and supporters from different parts of the state.

The event also featured the inauguration of the Labour Party Campaign Advisory Council, chaired by former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu.
Governor Otti, who is seeking re-election alongside his incumbent deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, described the 2027 election as an opportunity to consolidate what he called the achievements of his administration over the last 41 months.

He appealed to Abians to support the Labour Party for another four-year mandate, arguing that continuity would enable his government to deepen ongoing development initiatives and strengthen public institutions.

According to the governor, his administration intends to expand development through policies and investment decisions that will position Abia to benefit from emerging economic opportunities.

Otti’s message to opposition parties
One of the major highlights of the campaign flag-off was Governor Otti’s declaration that opposition parties must be allowed to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation or obstruction.

In a message that appeared directed at political actors across party lines, the governor reiterated that no opposition party should be prevented from using public facilities, including the stadium, provided the necessary applications, approvals and payments were made.

He also disclosed that security agencies had been directed to arrest anyone attempting to disrupt legitimate political activities in the state, irrespective of political affiliation.

“You do not have my mandate to attack people or to stop people from campaigning. You have no such mandate from me,” Otti declared.

He urged political parties and their supporters to concentrate on issues affecting the people rather than engaging in unnecessary personal attacks.

The governor further challenged opposition politicians to go beyond traditional campaign promises about salaries, pensions, road construction and urban sanitation, insisting that political campaigns should address the broader development needs of Abia.

He maintained that his administration had made significant progress in addressing some of the state’s longstanding governance and infrastructure challenges.

Labour Party inaugurates campaign advisory council

The ceremony also witnessed the inauguration of the Labour Party Advisory Council, with former Deputy Governor Ude Oko Chukwu appointed as chairman.

The council is expected to provide strategic guidance for Governor Otti’s re-election campaign and coordinate efforts towards the election of other Labour Party candidates contesting various positions in the state.

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, was represented by the Deputy National Chairman, Hon. Salisu Nuhu Mohammed.

Other prominent personalities at the event included Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe and the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa.

Popular Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo, also known as Mama G, equally delivered a goodwill message, commending the governor’s leadership and urging Abians to sustain their support.

The event was preceded by an interdenominational church service during which prayers were offered for the governor and the state.

What lies ahead for the Labour Party in Abia?

The November 1 flag-off marks the beginning of the party’s wider mobilisation activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

With Otti seeking another term and retaining Ikechukwu Emetu as his running mate, the Labour Party will be looking to consolidate its political structures across the state’s local government areas and constituencies.

However, the governor’s message on opposition rights also places an important responsibility on political actors and security agencies to ensure that the electoral environment remains peaceful and open to democratic competition.

Ultimately, the 2027 election will provide Abians with an opportunity to assess the records, promises and policy alternatives presented by the competing political parties before making their choice.
