Flydubai Captain Stabbed Mid-Air, Fights Back as Plane Plunges 14,000 Feet — How Passengers Helped Avert Disaster

An Indian airline captain has recounted the terrifying moments he fought to save his passengers after his co-pilot allegedly attacked and stabbed him inside the cockpit of a Flydubai aircraft travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Captain Smit Machchhar was seriously wounded during the September 30 incident, but despite his injuries, he managed to help prevent what authorities are investigating as an apparent attempt to take control of the aircraft.

The Boeing 737 flight, carrying more than 170 people, eventually landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia after the aircraft plunged rapidly during the cockpit struggle.

The terrifying moments in the cockpit
According to Machchhar’s account during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, the ordeal began when his Omani co-pilot attacked him.
Machchhar was stabbed several times and fell to the cockpit floor.

But the situation became even more dangerous when the aircraft began losing altitude rapidly.

Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft falling by approximately 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the emergency.

Another reconstruction placed the aircraft’s descent from around 34,000 feet to about 16,000 feet within minutes.

Machchhar said that although he was badly injured, he realised the aircraft was descending and that he needed to act.
He eventually managed to open the cockpit door.

That decision proved crucial.

Passengers rushed into the cockpit
Once the cockpit door opened, passengers and crew members rushed forward and confronted the attacker.

One passenger, identified in reports as Yaniv Hayoun, helped overpower the co-pilot. Hayoun later said he pulled the aircraft’s controls during the crisis as the plane was descending.

Other passengers helped restrain the attacker while the injured captain received medical assistance.

The dramatic intervention bought valuable time for other trained pilots who were travelling aboard the aircraft.
Other pilots helped land the aircraft

There were additional Flydubai pilots aboard the flight who were not operating the aircraft at the time.

After the cockpit was secured, they were able to take over and stabilise the aircraft.

The plane was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it made an emergency landing.

The passengers later continued their journey to Tel Aviv on another aircraft.
Captain’s emotional account

Speaking from hospital, Machchhar told Modi that he was fighting for his life while also thinking about the people aboard the aircraft.

The captain, who has around 17 years of flying experience, said his training and experience helped him understand the seriousness of the aircraft’s descent even while he was severely injured.

He also recounted turning to prayer during the ordeal.

His actions have since attracted praise from Indian and Israeli leaders, while passengers who intervened have also been commended for their role in preventing a possible disaster.

What happened to the co-pilot?

The co-pilot, an Omani national, was arrested by Saudi authorities after the aircraft landed.

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have opened an investigation into the incident.

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack, the motive and whether there was any prior planning or possible terrorist connection.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly claimed that the co-pilot had undergone radical Islamist indoctrination and was suicidal.

However, those claims have not established the motive as a matter of fact, and investigators are still examining the circumstances.

Flydubai has urged against premature speculation while investigations continue.
A disaster narrowly avoided

The incident has raised fresh questions about cockpit security, pilot screening and how an attacker was able to carry out a violent assault inside an aircraft’s flight deck.

But the immediate sequence of events was extraordinary: an injured captain managed to open the cockpit door; passengers and crew confronted and restrained the attacker; additional pilots aboard the aircraft took control; and the plane was diverted safely to Saudi Arabia.

What began as a violent struggle thousands of feet above the ground ended with the aircraft safely on the runway at Tabuk.

For the passengers aboard Flight FZ1073, the intervention of the captain, crew members, passengers and fellow pilots turned a potentially catastrophic emergency into a story of survival.

The investigation into the incident and the co-pilot’s motive remains ongoing.
