Monday Editorial: While Nigerians Tighten Their Belts, APC Shares Luxury Prado SUVs to Its Youth Leaders
The National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dayo Israel, has triggered public criticism after showcasing the presentation of brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs to selected party youth leaders for election mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has raised questions about political spending, transparency and the priorities of the ruling party at a time when many Nigerians continue to struggle with rising living costs and the economic pressures associated with the Federal Government’s reforms.
In a post on X on Sunday, October 25, Israel announced that he had presented new 2026 Prado vehicles to selected youth leaders to support their election mobilisation activities.
“Today, I presented brand new 2026 Prado to my committed selected youth leaders to aid their election mobilisation activities,” he wrote.
He also expressed gratitude to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for what he described as her continued support for the party’s structure under his leadership.
Israel further declared that the APC would demonstrate its strength during the election period, promising to deliver votes at polling units.
However, the announcement attracted criticism on social media, with Nigerians questioning the cost of the vehicles and the timing of the presentation amid widespread economic hardship.
Premium Times, TheCable and Tribune Online reported that the accompanying video showed seven SUVs. Israel subsequently deleted the post, although the reports did not establish why he removed it. Neither the exact purchase price nor the source of funding was disclosed in his announcement.
Seven Prado SUVs Could Cost Over ₦1 Billion
The scale of the presentation has become a central part of the controversy.
According to prices advertised by Toyota’s authorised Nigerian distributor, CFAO Mobility, the 2026 Land Cruiser Prado Adventure model is listed at approximately ₦160 million, while the Premium version is listed at about ₦190 million.
At those indicative retail prices, seven vehicles could cost between ₦1.12 billion and ₦1.33 billion, depending on the models and specifications.
These figures are estimates based on advertised prices, not a confirmed invoice for the vehicles shown in Israel’s video. The actual cost and funding arrangement remain unclear.
The absence of this information has fuelled calls for greater transparency about the acquisition and intended use of the vehicles.
‘You Cannot Preach Sacrifice While Flaunting Privilege’
The controversy has also renewed debate about the message the ruling party sends to Nigerians who are being asked to endure economic difficulties while awaiting the promised benefits of government reforms.
Critics argue that displaying expensive vehicles for selected political operatives risks deepening the perception that party insiders enjoy privileges far removed from the daily struggles of ordinary citizens.
The central question is straightforward: how does the APC expect to sell the President’s reform agenda to Nigerians when a public display of luxury by its political structure competes with the message of sacrifice?
Political parties require resources to organise campaigns, coordinate their members and mobilise voters. Nevertheless, the scale of such spending, its source and its priorities remain legitimate subjects of public scrutiny.
The concern is not simply that vehicles were provided to party officials. It is that the presentation occurred against a backdrop of economic pressure on households, businesses and workers.
Pat Utomi Questions the Spending Priorities
The development also attracted criticism from Professor Pat Utomi, an economist and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Vanguard, Utomi questioned the contrast between the expensive vehicles and the financial challenges facing public institutions, particularly the military and healthcare sector.
He also raised the question of how the resources represented by the SUVs might have been used to support essential services, including the provision of ambulances.
His comments added to the wider debate about whether the scale of political expenditure reflects the priorities of a country confronting significant economic and social challenges.
What About Nigeria’s Youths?
The fact that the beneficiaries are youth leaders makes the controversy particularly significant.
Nigeria’s young people face pressing challenges, including unemployment, underemployment, limited access to affordable financing and the rising cost of establishing and sustaining small businesses.
Providing vehicles to selected party organisers may serve an electoral purpose, but it does not directly address these wider concerns.
The APC must therefore contend with questions about what youth empowerment means beyond party mobilisation and whether comparable attention is being given to creating opportunities for young Nigerians outside political structures.
The issue is especially relevant as political parties prepare for the 2027 general elections and seek to strengthen their relationships with young voters.
Questions the APC Should Answer
Several questions remain unanswered following the vehicle presentation:
Who financed the purchase of the Prado SUVs?
What was the actual cost of the vehicles?
Were they acquired with party funds, privately donated or provided through another arrangement?
What specific responsibilities will the beneficiaries undertake with the vehicles?
How does the scale of the spending align with the economic realities facing ordinary Nigerians?
These questions do not establish wrongdoing. However, providing clear answers would help address public concerns and distinguish verified facts from speculation.
Israel’s public appreciation of the First Lady for her support does not, by itself, establish that she personally purchased or financed the vehicles.
Headlineswave’s View: The Public Deserves Transparency
The APC has a legitimate interest in preparing its structures for the 2027 elections, and political mobilisation requires resources. But the public is equally entitled to question the priorities reflected in high-profile displays of political spending.
For families struggling to afford food, transport, school fees and healthcare, the sight of luxury SUVs being presented to selected party youth leaders inevitably raises questions about the contrast between political privilege and everyday hardship.
The issue is not whether political parties should equip their organisers. It is whether such expenditure is transparent and whether political leaders recognise the public concerns generated by these displays.
You cannot preach sacrifice to the people while flaunting privilege in their faces.
That is the difficult question the Prado controversy has placed before the APC as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
The party’s explanation of the vehicles’ funding, cost and purpose would help Nigerians assess the development on the basis of facts rather than speculation.
This report draws on published accounts by Premium Times, TheCable, Tribune Online and Vanguard, alongside advertised Nigerian retail prices for the 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
The reports identified seven vehicles in the video and confirmed that Israel linked the presentation to election mobilisation. The actual purchase price, funding source and reason for deleting the post have not been independently established.
